Gobblers & Dirt Tracks

Maddie Gordon

"When he was young, I told Dale Jr. that hunting and racing are a lot alike. Holding that steering wheel and holding that rifle both mean you better be responsible." -Dale Earnhardt

This weekend will be another busy one – Spring Turkey Season and Schaeffer’s Oil Spring Nationals Series at Clay Valley Speedway! Friday night, the local dirt track, Clay Valley Speedway, will have the Late Models on the track for an awesome event. Other classes will race as well, but when those Late Models start up, the racing really gets fun….and loud! Then, Saturday morning, Spring Turkey Season kicks off! We have been hearing the gobblers around the region so it should be a good start to the season.

Fishing:

The weather for today and tomorrow looks wonderful, but the rain should be setting in Friday for the weekend. Right now, the river is flowing at a steady 590 cfs and the temperature is up to 63 degrees Fahrenheit. The fishing and kayaking have been great so far! The fish are moving around and the water levels are just right for a steady float and no dragging. We rent kayaks year-round, so be sure to come see us for your next adventure!

This week we would like to feature some combos that are great travel companions. These pocket combos are perfect to toss in the trunk, backpack or kayak, when space is limited. They are tangle-free rods that collapse down to just 18” long. I like to carry one when I’m on the motorcycle so I can fish anytime!

Firearms:

Our featured firearm of the week is the Hi-Point 916 9mm – in Pink Camo and Desert Digital. These firearms are backed by a lifetime warranty and excellent customer service. Hi-Point prides itself in quality control and customer satisfaction. The Hi-Point 916 is a very reliable and durable pistol that will not let you down.

Unique Item:

This week’s unique item is an Ida Bisek Prokop Prairie Picture. Ida Bisek Prokop (1902 – 1990) was born in South Dakota and raised in North Dakota. She used a variety of mediums including metals, paint and mixed media. These pictures are highly sought after by collectors, as they are hand-made with feathers and flowers. She used a combination of dainty grasses, wild prairie flowers, butterfly wings and feather-tips to create one-of-a-kind Native arts. She also hand-airbrushed and water-colored the backgrounds. Each picture is personally signed and was created in the 1940’s and 1950’s.

Events:

Be sure to sign up for the guided education kayak trip on April 27, 2019. Space is limited and spots are filling fast. For just $25 per person, you will enjoy a 2.5-hour kayak trip led by our guide, Idalina, a box lunch from Milton’s Trailhead Grille and a special mussel presentation by Ms. Terry Vencil at Blue Belle Island. To officially reserve your place, please call 276-608-6907, contact us through email or Facebook messaging or stop in the store. We look forward to spending the day with you on the river!
